Who says family always means blood? At least none of the dictionaries ever mention this.

What the famous axiom says is that blood is always thicker than water. This too is a subject of contention with reference to the human society.

By modern and liberal standards, a basic family unit consists of one or two parents and their children. This itself denies that family means blood. It is so unnatural for the boy and girl from the same blood stream to create a family. They must come from different blood relationships.

By traditional and more conservative standards, family always means a group of people, related by birth, affinity, relationships or even none of these so long as they share same love, respect, and loyalties.

From my point of view, a family is made up of souls who give their best to each other and who bring out the best in each other. By the word, the best, I mean the sentiments of love, respect and gratitude, the spirit of cooperation, and the measure of self-confidence in one’s own capabilities. This is in consonant with the parameters of the best in the quote which are, love for family, own stability, and sense of loyalty.

The souls that I consider as my immediate family are those to whom I owe responsibility. My extended family members do not belong to any specific group, community, society or even generations. They do not even remain constant. They come and go in my life, but they always leave a permanent mark and memory in my mind.

The story of Dr O’Brien and his innovative discovery of power of the sun has already inspired my thoughts. The temperature in a closed vehicle parked in the open space on a hot summer day in some places in some states, may reach the same as the discovery of Dr O’Brien, so much so that one cannot even touch the steering wheel or other gadgets, so hot becomes the temperature of the interior that it would sterilize any mask left inside the vehicle. Just a thought.

By the laws of physics, blood is indeed thicker than water, but by the laws of humanism, the water in sentimental teary eyes is far more precious than any body fluid. Tears flow only with, and/or for those whom you love, admire, or to whom you simply Belong.
